AHCCCS has implemented training and testing standards for Direct Care Workers (DCWs) offering direct
care services (Attendant Care, Personal Care, and Homemaker) to Arizona Long Term Care System
(ALTCS) members residing in their own homes. Effective from October 1, 2012, all AHCCCS provider
agencies providing direct care services must employ DCWs who have successfully completed the
required competency tests within 90 days of their hiring, unless they qualify for an exemption from the
training and testing prerequisites (e.g., Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, and Certified Nurse
Aide). The testing records are transferable between employers, and DCWs do not need to retake the
tests unless they have a gap in their direct care field experience lasting at least two years.
